For faculty projects and master's and doctoral thesis projects, an endorsement from the Ethics Committee of the School of Engineering may be required, according to the characteristics of the project and at the request of the principal investigator. In case such an endorsement is required, an evaluation will be necessary to identify, analyze and assess the potential damage or risks to the people or communities that would be involved in the projects as external participants. Such involvement may be related to participation in information processes, co-creation of knowledge, or being subjects of experimentation.

In this sense, and taking as an example the experience of the Faculty of Health in the field of research ethics, research projects should include sufficient information on external participants, the participation process, informed consent (if applicable), the risks associated with the participation process, as well as actions to mitigate or prevent such risks.

When human beings are not involved as external participants, it should be made clear if the research involves other biological systems, such as organisms, parts of organisms and ecosystems, highlighting their origin, characteristics, sample size or other aspects that provide information on the subject.
